Tasmanian devil DNA shows signs of cancer fightback

Posted By: Unknown - 16:34

A genetic study of Tasmanian devils has uncovered signs that the animals are rapidly evolving to defend themselves against an infectious face cancer.

One of just three known transmissible cancers, this tumour has wiped out 80% of wild devils in the past 20 years.

Researchers looked at samples from 294 animals, in three different areas, before and after the disease arrived.

Two small sections of the devil genome appear to be changing very fast - and contain possible cancer-fighting genes.

The team, made up of US, UK and Australian scientists, described their findings in the journal Nature Communications.

They say the results offer much-needed hope that the species, which is unique to Tasmania, could survive the disease.

Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) was discovered in 1996 and kills nearly every devil it infects. Essentially a single tumour that jumps between hosts, it is transferred when the aggressive beasts bite each other's snouts.

Only two other infectious cancers are known to science. A similar tumour is shared between the genitals of dogs when they mate, and has traversed the globe since it originated 11,000 years ago; another was discovered in 2015 affecting clams on the US west coast.

Speaking to journalists in a teleconference, co-author Dr Paul Hohenlohe said he and his colleagues were in a unique position to observe the Tasmanian devil population responding to the cancer threat - because their samples spanned separate locations and reached from 1999 through to 2014. Using the latest DNA sequencing methods, they were able to look for changes right across the devil genome. "We characterised about 800,000 locations across the genome of each individual Tasmanian devil," said Dr Hohenlohe, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Idaho. "Our goal is to look for genetic variants that could convey some sort of resistance… so that it may be possible to manage captive populations to ensure that that genetic variation is maintained." Sure enough, among that wealth of data, the team found that two particular stretches of DNA were under acute selection pressure: they were changing faster than the rest of the genome, and specific gene variations were obviously on the rise - in all three populations.
The team is now working to characterise the specific genes in more detail. There may be things to learn that could help tackle cancer in humans - or explain where these baffling contagious cancers came from.
"One of the big questions is, what do these cancers have in common? [Then] we can figure out how cancers evolved to be transmissible in the first place," Dr Storfer said.
The tumour spreading between bivalves in the Pacific can actually jump from one species to another, he added.
"The fear is that we may see more cancers down the road that are transmissible between species."
Dr David Rollinson is a biologist at the Natural History Museum in London who specialises in the genetics of how hosts and parasites evolve together.
He said the new study was an impressive - and encouraging - example of natural selection in action.
"I find it quite exciting," Dr Rollinson told the BBC. "There's been great concern that the Tasmanian devils may be wiped out by this strange, transmissible cancer.
"And it now seems that there's just a little bit of hope - that the selection pressure is actually driving a response by the devils, so they're getting a genetic profile that might actually give them some protection."

Marvel’s Newest Hero Luke Cage is All Set for Next Month

Posted By: Unknown - 16:23

There is nothing more annoying than a man with a thick skin and with Marvel’s new hero in town, and it is none other than Luke Cage. Harlem’s thug life has gotten a pretty bad reality check. So, next month onward, Netflix will be housing Luke Cage, another one of Marvel’s heroes and the trailer has just surfaced, painting a pretty picture of how addictive the show could get.

Like any story would go, this man was a guinea pig for an experiment and what he came out as was something he hadn’t ever asked for. But that is alright, everyone who has ever seen a superhero movie, knows how it turns out. Either they turn into a malicious evil the world can do without or a pretty good hero with a charming personality; and needless to say, that Luke belongs to the second category, reports Hollywood Life.

For those who are unaware of who he is, he is a complete badass, who has been allotted with dialogue which should go up the wall of fans’ favorite quotes. Besides, he bears an impervious skin. The teaser shows people firing at him and he is in his unflinching mode, until things go down with a bang.

He also shows a chiseled physique, showing how buff he is, even beyond measure that gives men an inspiration to live for. The only downside to being any such superhero is that, he has to buy new clothes every single time he engages in fights, which is actually pretty often.

Shocking!!! Key Islamic State leader killed in apparent U.S. strike in Syria

Posted By: Unknown - 15:58

Islamic State said on Tuesday one of its most prominent and longest-serving leaders was killed in what appeared to be an American air strike in Syria, depriving the militant group of the man in charge of directing attacks overseas.

A U.S. defense official told Reuters the United States targeted Abu Muhammad al-Adnani in a Tuesday strike on a vehicle traveling in the Syrian town of al-Bab. The official stopped short of confirming Adnani's death, however.

Such U.S. assessments often take days and often lag behind official announcements by militant groups.

Adnani was one of the last living senior members, along with self-appointed caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who founded the group and stunned the Middle East by seizing huge tracts of Iraq and Syria in 2014.

As Islamic State's spokesman, Adnani was its most visible member. As head of external operations, he was in charge of attacks overseas, including Europe, that have become an increasingly important tactic for the group as its core Iraqi and Syrian territory has been eroded by military losses.

Advances by Iraq's army and allied militia toward Islamic State's most important possession of Mosul have put the group under new pressure at a moment when a U.S.-backed coalition has cut its Syrian holdings off from the Turkish border.

Those military setbacks have been accompanied by air strikes that have killed several of the group's leaders, undermining its organizational ability and dampening its morale.

A U.S. counter-terrorism official who monitors Islamic State said Adnani's death will hurt the militants "in the area that increasingly concerns us as the group loses more and more of its caliphate and its financial base ... and turns to mounting and inspiring more attacks in Europe, Southeast Asia and elsewhere".

Under Adnani's auspices, Islamic State launched large-scale attacks, bombings and shootings on civilians in countries outside its core area, including France, Belgium and Turkey.

The official said Adnani's roles as propaganda chief and director of external operations had become "indistinguishable" because the group uses its online messages to recruit fighters and provide instruction and inspiration for attacks.

Islamic State's Amaq News Agency reported that Adnani was killed "while surveying the operations to repel the military campaigns against Aleppo." Islamic State holds territory in the province of Aleppo, but not in the city where rebels are fighting Syrian government forces.

Amaq did not say how Adnani, born Taha Subhi Falaha in Syria's Idlib Province in 1977, was killed. Islamic State published a eulogy dated Aug. 29 but gave no further details.

INROADS INTO ISLAMIC STATE

Recent advances by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias, and by Syrian rebels backed by Turkey, have made inroads into Islamic State holdings in Aleppo province, cutting them off from the Turkish border and supply lines along it.

Iraqi army advances against the jihadist group mean Baghdad is on track to retake Mosul by the end of this year, the head of the U.S. military's Central Command General Joseph Votel said on Tuesday.

Among senior Islamic State officials killed in air strikes this year are Abu Ali al-Anbari, Baghdadi's formal deputy, and the group's "minister of war", Abu Omar al-Shishani. Adnani had joined the group under its founder Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

There were conflicting reports earlier on Tuesday as to where and how he died.

A senior Syrian rebel official said Adnani was most probably killed in the Islamic State-held city of al-Bab in an air strike. Citing unconfirmed reports, he said Adnani was in the Aleppo region to raise morale in the face of mounting pressure.

Islamic State's territory around Aleppo is of particular significance to the group because it is also the location of Dabiq, where an Islamic prophecy holds the last battle between Muslims and infidels will rage, heralding the end of time.
FACE OF GROUP

Iraq said in January that Adnani had been wounded in an air strike in the western province of Anbar and then moved to the northern city of Mosul, Islamic State’s capital in Iraq.

Adnani is a Syrian from Binish in Idlib, southwest of Aleppo, who pledged allegiance to Islamic State's predecessor al Qaeda more than a decade ago and was once imprisoned by U.S. forces in Iraq, according to the Brookings Institution.

He was from a well-to-do background but left Syria to travel to Iraq to fight U.S. forces there after its 2003 invasion, and only returned to his homeland after the start of its own civil war in 2011, a person who knew his family said.

He had been the chief propagandist for the ultra-hardline jihadist group since he declared in a June 2014 statement that it was establishing a modern-day caliphate spanning swaths of territory it had seized in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

Adnani had often been the face of the Sunni militant group, such as when he issued a message in May urging attacks on the United States and Europe during the holy month of Ramadan.

The United States designated him a "global terrorist" this year and said he was one of the first foreign fighters to oppose U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq since 2003 before becoming spokesman of the militant group.

There is a $5 million reward on his head under the U.S. "Rewards for Justice" program.

Live updates: What you need to know about Donald Trump’s Everett rally

Posted By: Unknown - 15:49

Donald Trump is holding a rally Tuesday at Everett's Xfinity Arena. Democrats are having a counter-rally at Clark Park, then marching to the arena.

What you need to know:

A rally at Everett’s Xfinity Arena begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 4. Trump is also in town to gather cash at a fundraiser before the rally.
Free tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis through the Washington State Republican Party’s website. People are already lining up to get in.
An anti-Trump protest led by Everett’s mayor also is planned.
Here’s how traffic could be impacted.

Immigration is a top issue for these Trump supporters.

Kim Walker, a 30-year-old from Redmond who makes figure-skating dresses for a living, said she supports Donald Trump because Trump has promised to “get a handle on immigration” by building a wall along the border with Mexico.

Walker said she doesn’t believe that Trump is racist or sexist, despite his many inflammatory statements. The real-estate tycoon has hired people of all races and religions, she said.

“I like what he’s saying and how he says it, how he rubs people the wrong way,” Walker said. “People need to get a thicker skin.”

Alex Bolt, a 25-year-old from Everett who runs a cleaning company, sees things differently. He walked past the line for the rally blasting the rap song “F*** Donald Trump” from his cell phone and a portable speaker.

Bolt said Trump’s supporters aren’t friendly towards people of color, like himself. He said seeing so many Trump supporters in his city makes him feel “upset, hurt and emotional.”

“Someone looked at me and said, “This guy doesn’t like white people.’ My mom is white,” he said. “Every person I’ve spoken to who supports Trump has a problem with people of color.”

Near the front of the line, Helen Miller of Bremerton, said she’s an immigrant herself. Miller declined to share her age but said she made her way to the U.S. long ago “through the front door,” drawing a distinction between herself and undocumented immigrants.

Miller said the country has changed too much in recent years. Rather than declare that “Black Lives Matter,” she said “Black Robes Matter,” explaining that she worries about Hillary Clinton appointing left-wing justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Update, 2:15 p.m.

Trump inspires this 62-year-old Granite falls man to finally register to vote.

    — Jim Brunner (@Jim_Brunner) August 30, 2016

Dave Jenkins, a maintenance supervisor from Granite Falls, says he registered to vote for the first time this year at the age of 62 because of Trump.

Jenkins said Trump would build up the military so the world fears America again. “Now they laugh at us,” he said.

Diane Jenkins, his wife, said she trusts Trump to get control of illegal immigration. “He is the man who has the cajones to do the job,” she said.

But Diane Jenkins said she didn’t agree with all of Trump’s immigration rhetoric or proposals, such as his “deportation force.”

“They’re families,” she said of the millions of undocumented workers in the U.S. “You can’t just take people and throw them out.”

She said immigrants and their families should have a path to legal status — even though Trump attacked his GOP rivals for such so-called amnesty plans during the primaries.

Ask Ryan Leenders, 30, a member of the International Association of Machinists, who grew up a Democrat in a single-parent household. By age 12 he had set up a nice neighborhood business mowing and edging lawns for $20 a pop. He voted for Obama eight years ago. Now he’s an ardent Trump supporter. “Regardless of the picture they’re painting of him,” says Leenders about Trump, in an interview earlier this year, “he’d be a labor-first president.” Trump Country: Read the April profile of two Everett men who say Trump’s their guy.

Donald Trump supporters are already lining up for the rally in Everett. The arena seats 10,000 people.

Donald Trump is coming to Washington today for the second time during his campaign. The Republican presidential nominee is holding a rally in Everett before flying to Phoenix to give a speech Wednesday about immigration. Trump was last here in May, holding rallies in Spokane and Lynden, Whatcom County. Where there is a Trump rally, there usually is a counter rally. Everett’s mayor Ray Stephanson and other elected officials and labor and community leaders are leading the “No Hate in Our State” rally. The rally is at 4 p.m. in Clark Park, and will move to Xfinity Arena at 7 p.m., where demonstrators will protest outside where Trump is to speak. Traffic in the region could be snarled by Trump’s motorcade. It’ll be escorted by the Secret Service, which doesn’t reveal travel plans.

Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater has ‘significant’ knee injury

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a ‘‘significant’’ knee injury in practice Tuesday and the team was awaiting tests to determine how long he might be out.
Coach Mike Zimmer confirmed the injury a few hours after an ambulance took Bridgewater from the practice field to a nearby hospital. There is no timetable on how long the third-year quarterback will be out. But when Zimmer was asked if he had any hope of Bridgewater being able to return sometime this season, the coach replied, ‘‘I don’t know. It doesn’t look good right now.’’
Bridgewater dropped back to pass during a drill, planted his foot and immediately went down. He grabbed his left knee while concerned teammates and athletic trainers huddled around him.

Zimmer called off practice after 25 minutes, and the rest of the team walked off the field while Bridgewater was being attended to. Moments later, a siren-blaring ambulance pulled into the team’s Winter Park headquarters, stayed for about 10 minutes and then pulled away with the quarterback in tow, his leg immobilized in an air cast. ‘‘Teddy’s such a great kid,’’ Zimmer said. ‘‘I love this kid. Our fans love this kid.’’ Zimmer said the team would release full details when it receives the results of tests done on Bridgewater’s leg. Players were visibly distraught as they exited the field, some hurling expletives into the air. A small group remained behind, huddled around him in prayer as team athletic trainers tried to get him stabilized. Zimmer tried to straddle a fence in his remarks between being concerned for Bridgewater, one of the most popular players on the team, and not allowing his players to give up on a season that has not even started. He addressed the team in full after practice was called off and said he had also spoken multiple times to Bridgewater’s mother. ‘‘We’re not going to stick our heads in the sand, we’re not going to tuck our (tail between) our legs,’’ Zimmer said. ‘‘We’re not looking for excuses. We’re going to go out and fight like we always do.’’

Chris Brown rants against police surrounding his house after woman calls 911

Los Angeles police showed up at musician Chris Brown’s Los Angeles home Tuesday morning, responding to a call by a woman who said she needed help, an LAPD spokesman confirmed.
“Detectives are trying to make contact with Mr. Brown” and want to talk with the woman and any witnesses, Los Angeles Police Lt. Chris Ramirez told reporters later in the day, according to the Associated Press.
A woman called 911 to report Brown had threatened her with a gun and that she had run outside to call police, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing police sources. TMZ first reported the alleged threat.
By noon local time, news helicopter footage showed police assembled outside his house, as they awaited a judge to approve a search warrant.
Meanwhile, Brown — who has had several high-profile run-ins with the law, most notably for the 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna — took to Instagram to post videos. In them, he rails against the police and the media, declares his innocence and expresses exasperation with the controversy.
“So I’m asleep half the damn night and I just wake up, and all these [expletive] helicopter choppers is around, police out there at the gate,” he says in one. “What the [expletive] do you want from me, bro? I stay out the way, I take care of my daughter, do work.”
“When you get the warrant or whatever you need to do, you’re going to walk right up in here and you’re going to see nothing, you idiots,” Brown adds in another video. “I’m tired of dealing with you all. You all are the worst gang in the world, the police. I said it.”

“Every three months you come up with something, bro,” he says in one of them. “What’s going to be next?””
The Grammy-award winning Brown also took time to plug his new song and video, “Grass Ain’t Greener”
“Y’all ain’t doing anything but giving me better publicity. ‘Barricaded myself in my house?’ Have you seen my house? Imma barricade myself in a palace. I’m not coming out. For what?”
According to TMZ, rapper Ray J was among the people in Brown’s house Monday night and when he tried to leave, police handcuffed him, then let him go. By Tuesday afternoon, Ray J had also posted an Instagram video, saying he was “real upset about today” and that he supported Brown.
“I’m not happy with how things are handled and how people can take a false story and blow it up into something way more than it should be,” Ray J said. “You got just positive people around and you look outside and it’s like a war zone for no reason. For what? Some strangers said something that don’t got nothing to do with nothing. And to react like that, so fast, without really knowing the facts…It shouldn’t be like that.”

Rihanna recap of the 2016 MTV VMAs: A lot of labels on display - but not hers

With so much style worth profiling on the way into Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, we never got around to focusing on what was being worn (or not worn) by the folks inside Madison Square Garden – particularly Rihanna, whose multiple performances as well as being honored with the Video Vanguard Award afforded plenty of screen time for a handful of fashion brands. When RiRi took to the stage the first time, she was clad in a custom Hood by Air ensemble that included a custom pink “Cookie Ringer” T-shirt body suit. Finishing off the look were a Hearts on Fire diamond necklace, Lydia Courteille ruby rings, Cutler and Gross sunglasses and Comme des Garcons shoes.
Performance No. 2 found her kitted out in a pair of black Alexandre Vauthier pants, a pink, fur-trimmed bra by Rosamosario and a white T-shirt (or part of one anyway), which multiple reports credit to Adam Selman. (Alas, the provenance of the black mesh do-rag atop her head is unknown.) Wardrobe-wise RiRi went collaboration heavy for her third performance of the night, pairing a black Vetements X Juicy Couture bodysuit with long sleeves and padded shoulders (if you look close enough in some photos, you can see the word “Juicy” emblazoned in sparkly letters down the left arm of the outfit) paired with hip-high Vetements X Manolo Blahnik boots.
